Long Path North

Trail Construction Project - Long Path Section 36
Saturday, July 13, 2024
9:00am

July 13th and 20:  Trail Construction on Long Path Section 36, Thacher Park to Leesome Lane Above Altamont.

Your help is appreciated with completing the first phase of this new section that will bring the End-to-End trail terminus from the Thacher Park Escarpment to our new trail town of Altamont. On the way down, there are many wonderful views, rock bands and boulders, and a gorge.

The trail will be roughed out and fully flagged prior to our work day.  There will still be a need for side cutting, tread clearing, blazing, and some more technical work with water bar construction, puncheon bridging, switchbacking, one small creek crossing, and benching.  The group will be divided up between experienced trail work leaders for particular projects.

On July 20th, there is availability of free housing or camping at a local person's home in Altamont who is also volunteering that day.  It would give you the chance to become acquainted with our newest Trail Town, which is becoming a center for outdoor activity in Albany County.

All levels of experience, including those without experience, is appreciated.  It is recommended to bring work gloves, head protection such as a bike helmet that can be used when cutting anything overhead or assisting the sawyers, safety glasses, a folding limb saw, loppers, a sturdy lawn rake, and lunch and water.  We have a set of trail tools that can be shared, so bringing tools is not required.

Phase 2 is still being negotiated with local landowners, to bring the trail down to the village center.  It is hoped to be completed this fall.

Meeting Place:  Public parking behind the Altamont Enterprise on Maple Avenue/Rt 146 in Altamont at 9:00 AM. Google Maps link. There is limited parking at the trailhead, so we will carpool from there.

Rain Dates: July 14th and 21st.
